Get a practical education to become a legal assistant or legal administrative assistant with Humber's Law Firm Profile - Office Administration program, which provides you with the essential knowledge and skills you'll need to do the job well. Humber's partnership with a consortium of prominent national and international law firms will reinforce program concepts and add real-world depth to your legal studies through guest speakers, panel discussions, field trips and even paid work placement opportunities.
A relevant selection of legal courses will help you develop a solid understanding of the theories and procedures pertinent to your role. Learn how to transcribe legal documents, perform legal research, edit and proofread law firm documents, prepare legal accounts, and liaise with clients, lawyers and government and court officials to execute legal matters. Get hands-on training in specialized legal software such as InForm Court Forms, Teraview, PCLaw and Quicklaw.
Our Advisory Committee provides regular review and input of our curriculum ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments.
You will learn the theory and procedures associated with real estate, litigation and corporate law. As well, you will get the opportunity to work in a simulated legal environment, where you will use specialized legal application software, draft and prepare legal documents, handle client's files and manage deadline/time limitations.
In one year students are taught the theoretical knowledge of legal practice and procedures in different areas of law along with practical, hands-on applications. Prominent national and international law firms add real-world depth to your studies. These firms facilitate learning through guest speakers, panel discussions and field trips, as well as providing internship opportunities.

Preparing legal documents, maintaining records and files and conducting research to assist lawyers or other professionals are among the main kinds of work you'll get to do. With your understanding of pertinent legal procedures and your superior administration and research skills, you can help your employer maintain an efficient and productive law practice.

Be in demand as a legal assistant or legal administrative assistant at one of these law firms, at a government agency, or in private industry.

Use your new knowledge, skills and behaviours through a seven-week paid work placement during the second semester. These placements, arranged by the school at prominent national and international law firms in Toronto, complement the practical courses at Humber and constitute an integral part of your learning.

Topics will include legal terminology, client records, real estate documents for a buyer and a seller and related correspondence, and initial procedures for civil litigation, including the court system, resources, retainers, and authorizations. The student will use Microsoft 2010 and Teraview (e-reg) software in a simulated setting of a professional law office environment. The student will receive instruction in transcribing techniques for accurate first-copy production that includes the application of listening, language usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting and proofreading skills. He/she will transcribe from digital media using BigHand and Microsoft Word 2010 software. | 4 |
