Psychological Crisis (Extreme Mental Distress)

A psychological crisis exists when an individual is threatening harm to:

  • him or herself 
  • others 
  • campus property
  • or is out of touch with reality due to a severe drug reaction or a psychotic break

A psychotic break may be manifested by hallucinations and/or uncontrollable behavior. The person could be a psychiatric patient walk-away.

If a psychological crisis occurs, take the following action:

  • Never try to handle a situation you feel is dangerous on your own
  • Notify the Department of Public Safety: call extension 4000 or 416-675-8500
  • Clearly state that you need immediate assistance
  • Give your name and your location
