Humber Appreciates Support for Colleges
in 2011 Ontario Budget
Welcomes recognition of colleges’ role
in producing future workers

Toronto, Ontario – March 30, 2011 – Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning appreciates the support from the Ontario government’s commitments and investments in postsecondary education in the 2011 provincial budget.

“The immediate funding for instructional equipment and operations is especially important to Humber as we anticipate enrolment growth to exceed 10 per cent for the fall 2011 semester,” said John Davies, President, Humber. “This budget has put the needs of students in the forefront and will help our commitment to produce a strong and skilled workforce for the future of Ontario.

Budget funding allocations that will benefit Ontario postsecondary institutions and students include $20 million in instructional equipment for 2011-2012, $44 million over three years for literacy and basic skills, and $64 million in 2011-12, rising to $309 million in 2012-14 for operating grants for an additional 60,000 postsecondary places by 2015-16.   The budget also allocates $22.5 million this year for the Summer Jobs Strategy, which targets youth in high-needs neighbourhoods.

Davies also praised the government’s commitment to engage colleges in creating new multi-year accountability agreements that ensure sustainable growth and include plans to improve quality of education and increased student achievement.

“We look forward to working with the provincial government to support their goal to add 20,000 students to the college system by 2015-16 so that there will be room for every qualified student in Ontario,” said Davies.  “The multi-year commitment is significant as it will allow colleges to do critical long-range planning to meet the increasing demand for a career-focused college education.”
