Humber launches new Research Analyst Program

First program from new Liberal Studies Department

Toronto, Ontario – January 17, 2012 – Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning and the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) announced the launch of a new Department of Liberal Studies featuring its flagship Research Analyst program.

The new Ontario Graduate Certificate is an 11-month, three-semester program that includes a 12-week work placement. It is designed to meet the needs of both industry and government, who each rely heavily on research and evidence-based information when developing new policy. Classes will take place at Humber’s Lakeshore Campus, with the first cohort of students beginning in September 2012. More information about the program is available at humber.ca/research-analyst.

“For industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government, resource efficiency and evidence-based decision making is paramount,” says Jason Galea, associate dean, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “When making investments, developing policy or allocating resources, solid data and analysis is required to drive strategic decisions. This program will provide graduates with the skills needed to gather and assess data required by organizations to make informed decisions.”

With a focus on social research, the program covers all major aspects of the research process, including research design, information retrieval and evaluation, data collection, analysis and interpretation, and the preparation and presentation of research findings. Graduates can expect to find a variety of careers, including working as analysts, community and social development officers, consumer advisors, economic policy researchers, health and social policy development officers, marketing researchers, research consultants and more.

“This program meets a need in terms of providing potential employees with the skills and training in this field,” says Michael Macchiusi of Harris/Decima, who is serving on the program advisory committee. “This is the only GTA program that will meet the needs of both industry organizations such as Harris Decima as well as government and NGOs."
