Humber Students Add School to the Cool

Students part of World Cup Ski-Cross HD Broadcast

Toronto, Ontario – February 16, 2011 – Humber College Broadcasting Television/Videography (BRTV) students were part of the crew broadcasting Canadian Chris del Bosco winning the Rockstar Ski Cross Grand Prix at Blue Mountain on February 11.

Del Bosco’s win will air in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. Humber students participated as part of the Double Black Diamond Production (DBDP) broadcast crew.

“Students covered a major sporting event in challenging conditions,” said Michael Wright, a professor in the Humber BRTV department. “DBDP trusted our students to excel, which is why they invited Humber. When these students apply for jobs, they can say they worked on a program that aired on a major Canadian network. Not many students can say that.”

Students worked on the live broadcast and the sports production teams, in roles including producer, technical directors, camera operators, editors, and more. Humber students worked with SCORPIO, Humber’s new high-definition (HD) television mobile truck. SCORPIO is the most technically advanced mobile in any college in Ontario. The compact 35’ mobile television facility features the latest in state-of-the-art HD broadcast equipment, including top-of-the-line high-definition cameras, a video production switcher, a digital recording system, broadcast graphics software, edit facilities and more.

“I was totally psyched to be working at a ski cross event that had Canadian Olympians competing,” said second-year student Jessica Bria, who worked on video as part of the Blue Mountain Screen Presentation crew. “I remember watching the Olympics a year ago and it was the coolest event there. Now I got to be a part of it. This was the kind of experience I need as I look for a job.”
