Toronto, Ontario – April 20, 2011 – Students in Humber College’s civil engineering technology and architecture technology programs will now have use of a new Structural Steel Teaching Aid as they learn about structural detailing and design.
The steel teaching aid is built-up by connecting a variety of structural steel shapes using bolted-type or welded-type connections. It is approximately 4.5m tall by 3.5m wide and is supported by a single reinforced concrete spread footing (concrete foundation). It will be dedicated in a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 26 at Humber’s North campus.
The purpose of the steel structure is to help students visualize how the wide variety of structural steel shapes come together and are joined to form the frameworks in buildings, towers, bridges and other edifices which dot the landscape of Canada.
“This will be an advantage for our students and be used as an effective learning tool in our structural detailing and design courses,” said Bill Angelakos, program coordinator of the civil engineering technology program in the School of Applied Technology.
The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), under the direction of Suja John, CISC regional contact for Ontario, facilitated the donation of the steel teaching aid, which has a value of approximately $40,000 (parts and labour). Humber is only the third college in Ontario to receive this teaching aid.
