College unveils new Fashion Institute
Toronto, Ontario – November 26, 2010 – Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning has turned up the style in south Etobicoke with the grand opening of The Business School’s Fashion Institute. The new facility is the hub of Humber’s Fashion Management Degree program and part of Humber’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the Lakeshore community.
“Humber’s Fashion Management degree program has grown significantly in recent years, creating the need for a dedicated learning centre in which students develop the specialized skills required for the business of fashion,” says Alvina Cassiani, dean, The Business School. “Students will work with industry to learn the many elements of the fashion environment.”
The Humber Fashion Institute features a retail store front designed entirely by students working with leaders in the local fashion scene. The facility is a shared resource for the fashion industry, provides students with the opportunity to put classroom learning into practice and will be a host venue for fashion events.
“I was excited to hear that the Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning opened a Fashion Institute. This allows students the opportunity to apply what they have learned at school and put it into practice,” says Connie McCulloch, senior vice president, Winners. “The new space encourages the fashion industry to work more directly with the students which benefits them by gaining additional specialized skills. As a retailer who is constantly looking to recruit students, this makes their transition from classroom to workplace that much easier and more successful.”
The Fashion Institute is a specialized learning centre featuring a studio and classroom. Students will learn store planning, visual merchandising, trend forecasting, marketing, e-retailing and the evolution of fashion in a simulated environment.
"It's fantastic to have a dedicated learning space on campus. The Humber Fashion Institute provides my classmates and I with all the tools and resources we need to get the most out of our program. The facilities and resources help put us a step ahead for when we take the industry by storm,” says Heather Johnson, Fashion Management degree student.
