Humber awards winners of seventh annual Greatest High School Teacher Contest

Toronto, Ontario – March 30, 2012 – Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning has awarded the 2012 Greatest High School Teacher to:

Award winning teacher:

Steve Bottos
Father Henry Carr Secondary School, Toronto, ON
Nominated by: Vanessa Colucci, Humber Public Relations diploma student

John Brisbois
St. Paul Secondary School, Trenton, ON
Nominated by: Scott Lockwood, Humber Funeral Services diploma student

Mita Hoffer
King City Secondary School, King City, ON
Nominated by: Shayne Maglay, Humber Film and Television diploma student

To participate in the competition, Humber students were asked to write and submit an essay nominating a teacher who influenced them and made positive changes in their lives. A panel of judges selected the winning entries.

Bottos, Brisbois and Hoffer were recognized in a ceremony at Humber. As part of the honour, the college will award tuition for one year to one student from each of the high schools who attend Humber beginning in Fall 2012.

“Humber is dedicated to excellence in teaching and this is our way of showing our appreciation to those teachers,” says Peter Madott, associate dean, The Business School.

The winning essays this year were especially moving. Colucci, Lockwood and Maglay nominated their respective teachers because each helped the students to succeed in reaching their postsecondary aspirations. "It's safe to say that I would not be at Humber without Mrs. Hoffer’s support," said Maglay.
