Humber Film and Television Students Show Reel Experience

Media Advisory

For Immediate Release

Toronto, Ontario – April 15, 2011 – Graduating students from Humber College’s Film and Television Production Advanced Diploma program presented their final year projects at the program’s annual showcase last night at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. A second showcase screens this evening at 7:30 p.m.

The Humber Film & Television showcase includes 13 short films across a variety of genres, eight television commercials and a series of 3D Public Service Announcements (PSAs). The screening is the result of 16 months of work for 85 graduating students. Featured works include a film about video game addiction, another about euthanasia, a film inspired by the life of Aung San Suu Kyi, a documentary about female genital mutilation, PSAs shot entirely in 3D, and much more.

“For students, the final year project is the culmination of their studies and allows them to take on new creative roles. Dozens of emerging directors, producers, production designers, directors of photography and camera operators rose to the occasion to demonstrate their abilities. The showcase brings all of the students’ projects to life on screen, the canvas in which they create their art,” said Eva Ziemsen, Program Coordinator, Film and Television Production.

Students were impressed at seeing their work at the flagship TIFF theatre. “I felt a great sense of accomplishment while watching my film on the big screen. It confirmed that I’m ready to make the transition from student to filmmaker,” said graduating student Cassandra DePetrillo, who wants to produce and direct documentary films. “I want to be the voice for people who don’t have the means to tell their stories. Humber’s Film and Television Production program taught me the business of film making, connected me with industry contacts and gave me the practical experience to pursue my career.”

The Showcase is open to the public. Tickets cost $10 each and are available at the door. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the screening begins at 7:30 p.m. TIFF Bell Lightbox is located in Reitman Square at 350 King Street West.

About the Film and Television Production Program
Humber’s Film and Television Production program offers students the skills and knowledge needed to launch a successful career in film or television production. Students complete film and video projects while learning to work as part of a production team. The curriculum includes individual and multidisciplinary assignments geared to developing both creative and technical proficiency. Large studios and modern production equipment support these goals, enabling students to produce high-quality work. A comprehensive and balanced approach to study includes opportunities to produce, write, direct, shoot and edit on numerous projects. With a strong commitment to post-production, students gain practical experience on a variety of video and audio workstations. In addition, business marketing skills and a field placement are integrated into the third year of the program.
