Humber Hawks take flight on Rogers TV
Students to provide content for local channel

Toronto, Ontario – January 21, 2011 – Humber College’s Broadcast Television/Videography (BRTV) students and the Humber Hawks are teaming up with Rogers TV to showcase Humber’s top-ranked varsity teams, while providing students with valuable industry experience as they earn their credential.

Humber Hawks’ Varsity games will be shown on Rogers TV Cable 10 in Toronto and 63 in Scarborough every Sunday from January 23 to February 20, 2011 starting at 5 p.m. Students will broadcast and produce full coverage of basketball and volleyball games, along with team features, player interviews and profiles, stats packages and more. Rogers TV will then compile a four-hour show from all of the produced material.

“It’s a rush to be part of broadcasting a live sporting event. I’m pumped,” said BRTV student Sean Burt, who will be working as a camera operator for some of the matches. “The chance to work in the mobile HD production unit gives us the ability to jump into the field with the experience we need to stand out and get a job.”

Humber students will be working with SCORPIO, Humber’s new high-definition (HD) television mobile. SCORPIO is the most technically advanced mobile in any college in Ontario. The compact 35’ mobile television facility features the latest in state-of-the-art HD broadcast equipment, including top-of-the-line high-definition cameras, a video production switcher, a digital recording system, broadcast graphics software, edit facilities and more.

“This is a win/win for Rogers TV and for Humber,” said Annie Hadida, Rogers TV Toronto station manager. “Rogers TV will receive top-quality, broadcast-ready content that meets our need to provide more local sports programming. In turn, we are proud to feature Humber’s athletes and to provide future broadcasters with the chance to learn their craft in live situations.”

Rogers TV viewers will get a look at some of the top college athletes and teams across Ontario and Canada, including Humber’s undefeated men’s basketball and women’s volleyball squads.  The men’s basketball and volleyball teams, along with the women’s volleyball team are ranked in the top five teams across Canada, while women’s basketball is ranked third in Ontario.

“We feel that Humber has the best college sports program in the country,” said Humber assistant athletics director Jim Bialek. “This is an opportunity to raise awareness of college-level sports in the Toronto area, and for people to see what accomplished athletes we have.”
