Toronto, ON – April 9, 2011 – Humber College volleyball star Landis Doyle became the first Ontario athlete to be named the Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) athlete of the year for all sports.
The Female Athlete of the Year award was presented to Doyle at Humber College in Toronto on Saturday night at the year-end athletic banquet. She had been named CCAA Female Volleyball Player of the Year at the national championship in Saint John, NB several weeks ago. The recognition came at the end of a strong year for Doyle, in which she broke two Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) records, for points and for service aces, as well as leading the Hawks to a fourth straight championship.
“I’m completely shocked by this award. There’s so many deserving and worthy athletes across Canada, I didn’t expect this,” said the humble star, who plays middle for the Hawks. “I’m thankful to my coaches and my teammates. This award belongs to them more than it does to me. My time at Humber has been amazing in sports and in the classroom. I came to Humber for the academic program, and I’m glad I did.”
A third-year graphic design diploma student, Doyle juggles practices, games, volunteering at Humber community volleyball clinics and her studies. She has excelled academically and was named a 2010/11 Academic All-Canadian and an OCAA Academic All-Ontarian.
Doyle now holds the OCAA records for career points and aces, after breaking the previous records of 1,035 points and 188 aces. She is also a two-time All-Canadian, two-time OCAA Player of the Year, and has won many other awards.
Her coach, Chris Wilkins, said that despite the records and awards, Doyle stayed focused on the team goals.
“She’s a special kid. She works hard and I’ve really enjoyed watching her grow up over the last five years and turn into the player she is,” he said. “She has demonstrated skill, dedication, a humble attitude, sportsmanship and leadership this year. I’m so pleased that she won player of the year honours.”
Humber athletics director Doug Fox was on hand for the announcement.
“I have watched Landis lead our team to tremendous success over the last four years, and I know that she was always focused on helping the team win,” he said. “It’s a big thrill for us to see Landis win this award and we’re excited for her. It’s a fitting way for her to cap her career at Humber.”
Humber honoured Doyle this year by making her just the fifth women’s volleyball player to have her jersey number retired.
