Humber Students Bring School to the Cool

Students Supporting HD Broadcast of World Cup Ski-Cross

Toronto, Ontario – February 3, 2011 – Humber College Broadcasting Television/Videography (BRTV) students will be part of the cool, and the cold, that comes with the Rockstar Ski Cross Grand Prix at Blue Mountain on February 10 and 11.

Humber students will be part of the Double Black Diamond Production (DBDP) live broadcast. As the only school invited to participate, Humber students will have a unique opportunity to complete work placement hours towards completing their diploma. Students will work on the live broadcast and the sports production teams, in roles including producer, technical directors, camera operators, editors, and more.

“Students will get the chance to cover a growing sport in challenging conditions. This brings the classroom to the slopes, and to real life,” said Michael Wright, a professor in the Humber BRTV department. “DBDP trusts our students to excel, which is why they invited Humber. This will give students valuable work experience in an intense environment, preparing them for the future.”

Ski cross took the sporting world by storm at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Last year, at the first ski cross at Blue Mountain, more than 3,000 spectators packed the slopes. This year, the Canadian team will be among the favourites after the success it had in Vancouver.

“I’m totally psyched to be working at a ski cross event that has Canadian Olympians competing,” said second-year student Jessica Bria, who will be working on video as part of the Blue Mountain Screen Presentation crew. “I remember watching the Olympics a year ago and it was the coolest event there. Now I get to be a part of it. This is the kind of experience I need to get a job.”

Humber students will be working with SCORPIO, Humber’s new high-definition (HD) television mobile truck. SCORPIO is the most technically advanced mobile in any college in Ontario. The compact 35’ mobile television facility features the latest in state-of-the-art HD broadcast equipment, including top-of-the-line high-definition cameras, a video production switcher, a digital recording system, broadcast graphics software, edit facilities and more.

The Rockstar Ski Cross Grand Prix will be broadcast live to more than 20 countries as well as streamed live on sportsnet.ca. Rogers Sportsnet will also broadcast in Canada in two one-hour shows on Saturday, Feb. 19.
