Humber Supports Extension of Knowledge Infrastructure Program

Toronto, Ontario – December 10, 2010 – Humber College welcomes the Government of Canada’s announcement to extend the Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP) by seven months.

KIP is a component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan launched in 2009, developed in partnership with the provinces to renew the capital of the country’s post-secondary education system, providing upgraded facilities to meet the needs of students in undergraduate and training programs.

Projects funded through the program must now be completed by October 31, 2011, revised from the original deadline date of March 31, 2011.

As part of KIP, Humber has invested in new and renovated facilities, primarily at the Humber Lakeshore Campus, that help students to develop the skills and gain the experience they need to enter the work force, including:

  • the Humber Centre for Justice Leadership, a “CSI” centre featuring a crime scene investigation studio and forensic evidence processing lab
  • the Humber Arts and Media Studios, a dedicated facility for media and performing arts students, including a theatre, scene shop, stage combat lab and film studios
  • a new learning and study complex providing facilities for Humber’s new Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting degrees. The building will feature a student learning commons and a media centre, and is set to open in September 2011.

“The Government of Canada’s announcement allows for Humber, and all colleges, to complete the expansion and modernization of infrastructure in a fair and reasonable manner,” said John Davies, president of Humber. “Our dedicated faculty and administrators, along with our facilities staff, have worked tirelessly to ensure that the KIP funds meet their objectives. This announcement recognizes these efforts and ensures a realistic and achievable completion of the projects that are underway.”
