Dr. Richard Hook Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

TORONTO February 21, 2005 - Dr. Richard Hook, Vice-President Emeritus of Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, is to be recognized with a Minister’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Ontario’s college system.

The Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities Lifetime Achievement Award is given to deserving recipients who personify outstanding lifetime achievement in advancing his or her college, community and the Ontario college system.

“I am very gratified with the award. I hope my colleagues see it as a reflection of the many things we have done together,” says Dr. Hook.

Holding the position of vice-president, academic from 1986 to 2003, Dr. Hook helped make Humber the one of the most popular postsecondary institutions in Ontario while maintaining a reputation for excellence in education and innovation. His leadership saw Humber expand and increase the number of programs offered and made the institution the first in the province to offer postgraduate programs. Dr. Hook also developed the first collaborative diploma/degree programs between a university and a college. These developments helped to secure Humber as one of only 12 Vanguard Learning Colleges in North America.

Dr. Hook was also active with the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario, including serving as founding chair of the college system Credential Validation Service.

Along with his work at Humber and in the educational community in Ontario, Dr. Hook, who earned his M.Ed. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard, has led educational and development projects in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Caribbean. He has also served as a leader or member on educational studies in Britain, China, the Northwest Territories, the Middle East and Hong Kong.
