Toronto - First-place winners of Humber’s bus wrap contest had their designs displayed on the body of  two city buses after four weeks of strong team work. The buses were parked at Humber's Lakeshore Campus last week.

The first prize winners are: Alexandra Swanson, Andrew Clanahan and Eliana Franco for their design for iPhone; and Michael Cirillo, Scott Krysa and Melissa Nichol for FullThrottle.

The annual bus wrap design contest is open to 80 students from Humber’s advertising and graphic design program.

“We like the fact that students learn so much about outdoor advertising – in this case, a real ‘moving target,’ which is the bus,” says Ray Fry, Humber advertising and graphic professor. “It’s all about the real world and team participation.”

Autograph Trim of Mississauga, the sponsor of the competition since 2002, is a leader in the creation and installation of larger than life transit. Founders Ian and Kay MacIntosh didn’t make the project easy for the students and put them to the test.

The entry process challenged teams to pass the “five-second-test,” where each design was literally “run” past an audience to see if they understood the product message.

Autograph Trim provides the template for the students’ designs along with three transit-friendly products to select from. This year’s contest choices were: Chapman’s no-sugar ice cream products, FullThrottle energy drink and the new iPhone.

Students were not alone in the design process. Humber advertising  and graphic design professors Fry and Roger Boyle were dedicated to helping students reach the highest design level by providing teams with consistent feedback on a one-to-one basis.

“This level of faculty commitment was valuable for students and provided them with a true feel for the competitive nature and strategic insight required for success in the real advertising world,” says Heather Lowry, program co-ordinator of the advertising and graphic design program.

On April 23, the MacIntosh’s presented awards to the first, second and third place winners.
