2. What kind of project could I be doing?

Projects can be in any field of study at Humber and involve innovation, commercialization, prototype design and testing, proof of principle, competitive and market intelligence research, and business planning.

3. Can I be paid for my work?

Possibly. If you are working on a project that is not for academic credit you may be hired as a part-time research assistant, which is a paid position. Work done for academic credit is not usually paid.

4. Can I receive academic credit for working on a project?

Possibly. Co-ops, final-year projects or other types of academic obligations can be fulfilled by one of our projects depending on your program’s requirements.

5. Do I need any specific training before engaging in a project?

Yes. Before starting to work on a project you are required to read and understand several concepts, policies and guidelines. These can be found under Student Resources.

If you are hired has a research assistant you will also have to attend a Student Worker Health and Safety Session, which you can enroll in at the Career Centre.

6. How will I benefit from working on an applied research project?

Working on an applied research project is a rewarding experience. You’ll get real-life exposure in your field of study by applying what you learned in school. This type of experience looks great on your resume and prepares you for your career.

Additionally, some projects offer paid positions or can be used to fulfill academic requirements such as a co-op or internship.

7. What roles do partnering businesses/organizations, faculty and students play in an applied research project?

Partnering businesses or organizations present the problem that you will be trying to solve, and aide in producing the best results. Faculty oversee the project and are there for guidance and assistance. As a student, you will do the actual research work.

8. How long does a project take?

Projects are usually tailored to fit within your academic calendar and typically last one term, sometimes longer.

9. Do I need to work off-campus?

Some projects require that you work off-campus at a company’s headquarters or project site.

10. How are projects funded?

Projects are funded by agencies such as the Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The businesses and organizations with which we partner, and sometimes Schools within Humber, also fund projects.

11. What kinds of companies/organizations does Innovation Humber work with?

Any kind. We typically partner with small and medium sized enterprises that are product and service based in Ontario, but we are willing to explore additional opportunities.

12. I have an idea for an applied research project, who should I tell?

Contact Humber Research with your idea and we will explore all options for developing a research project around it. You can also inform faculty or your program coordinator.
