Simply defined, sustainability means we can meet our current social, economic and environmental needs without compromising the ability of future generations to enjoy the same. Sustainability looks at the issues and problems facing the world from a new perspective. This is because it focuses on three interdependent areas of concern: social justice, economic viability, and ecological preservation.
The most common way to describe sustainability is the 3-legged stool model. If sustainability is the seat, each leg represents the social, economic and environmental issues that underpin it (and support it). Of course, for the seat to be level (and in perfect balance), each leg must be equal. Sometimes this is called the “triple bottom line”.
