Sustainability Through Waste Management

Waste is a huge issue for a large institution like Humber College. This is because waste is not only generated by staff and students, but it’s also generated by day-to-day operations.

Encourage more recycling. You'd be amazed by just how much is recyclable! Most things don't need to end up in a landfill. However, they do need to be sorted properly so that they can be recycled. Encouraging proper sorting of recyclable waste can significantly increase the amount of recyclables the college sends to recycling facilities.

Starting a composting program. The college already captures organic waste produced by the Humber Food Services division, as well as the Culinary Labs. Next steps will include organic waste containers in the student areas of the cafeteria.

Reducing hazardous waste. Although facilities that dispose of hazardous waste safely are on the rise, a better way to deal with it is to simply to reduce the amount of waste generated by the college. Using less alkaline batteries, reducing the amount of materials that are printed, and using more eco-friendly products can reduce this waste drastically.

Encourage staff and students to reuse. Reusable containers, plates, and forks for lunches and snacks on-campus can also help reduce how much waste the college generates. For example, the residence offers the option to use china plates for dining, and Humber continues to encourage more of these types of choices.
