Over the four months of winter and spring, the Youth Jazz in the City Honour Combo Program will provide exceptionally talented youth in the Greater Toronto Area with the opportunity to further their musical and artistic development through an intensive training, mentoring, performance and recording experience overseen by leading professional Canadian jazz musicians. Ten to fourteen outstanding GTA music students aged 14-18 yrs will be selected through a recorded audition process. Successful candidates will be identified on the basis of talent, proficiency and experience and then divided into a main profile group and a second performing group.
Honour Combos A & B will begin rehearsals in late January 2012 and will perform at various events from February through to the TD Jazz Festival in late June. In July, both groups will participate in the Summer Youth Jazz Workshop where they will rehearse and study under a mentoring approach with nationally recognized jazz artists and record in Humber’s state-of-the-art recording studio.
Honour Combo A will be directed by the project’s Artistic Director, Kirk MacDonald while Honour Combo B will be directed by a local jazz artist with a national and/or international performance profile. Performance opportunities may include select festivals outside of Ontario providing the students with additional challenges and exposure.
All rehearsals will be held in the Music Department, Humber College Lakeshore Campus, 3199 Lakeshore Blvd. W, Toronto, Ontario
Performing at the Beaches Jazz Festival
