Construction & Reno Labs

The Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology takes you beyond a traditional classroom and provides hands-on practice in a simulated worksite. On site facilities include plumbing, carpentry, electrical, millwright, welding, industrial wood working, construction and renovation labs.

Our new construction lab is housed in a weather protected 8,000 square foot facility which allows full scale structures such as decks, gazebos, retaining walls and water features. We also have excellent computer labs for teaching our CAD (computer aided design and drafting) courses.

Here you will practice worksite health and safety practices in accordance with legislation and regulations; and how to review building plans and complete work in compliance with contractual obligations, codes, applicable laws, bylaws, standards and ethical practices. Coursework will include sustainability practices. You will also learn how to produce project sketches and documents in accordance with project specifications, assist in the preparation of estimations and to safely operate tools. You will be well-prepared for all building stages - from site layout and footings to the application of interior and exterior finishes.

Renovation Labs

Study all facets of house construction and basic building systems including building codes. Townhouse labs within the Centre provide the opportunity for students to gain practical, hands-on experience in demolition, tiling, mudding and taping, drywall and framing.

Woodworking Lab

A 10,000 square foot woodworking lab is located within The Humber Centre for Trades and Technology. Within the lab there is a large bright bench area for assembly and bench work as well as a kitchen cabinet installation area. All common industrial woodworking machines are available for student use, as well as a vacuum pressing area for curved forms and veneering, a hydraulic veneer press, three computer numerical control (CNC) routers, a CNC lathe, and a CNC dovetailer. A dedicated electronic classroom is available for lectures.

Students learn how to produce shop drawings, calculate a list of materials, cut out and assemble basic cabinetry or furniture and also apply a finish. Students will be shown how to safely operate most common stationary woodworking machinery, as well as run a number of CNC machines.
