Program Overview

Humber, in partnership with OntarioLearn, is pleased to offer the Teacher/Trainer of Adults certificate program as an online learning program. This certificate will train you to teach or facilitate adults in any capacity.  Whether you teach in a formal classroom setting, facilitate seminars, train employees, or teach a general interest program to adults, you will be well equipped to meet the needs of all of your adults learners. The first course, Adult Learning, will begin your studies by exploring the nature of adult learners, their learning styles, needs and characteristics, and analyze what makes teachers effective. You will then address cirtical apects in course delivery.

Note: Humber is a registering college and Durham is host college for this certificate program.

Admission Requirements

  • 19 years of age OR completed Ontario Secondary School Diploma OR Grade 12 Equivalency certificate achieve through College academic upgrading
  • entire certificate must be completed within 5 years

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, graduate will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:

  • assess the learning needs of individuals and organizations in valid and reliable ways
  • develop/design programs, courses, and/or learning events that meet adult learners’ needs, interests and organizational requirements
  • facilitate learning that addresses the diverse needs of adult learners by utilizing a variety of appropriate instructional techniques
  • determine program effectiveness by soliciting feedback from stakeholders
  • apply strategies to evaluate learning in adult learning environments
  • integrate reflective practice into all teaching activities
  • apply principles and best practices of a variety of theoretical models in adult learning environments
  • integrate the essential employability skills into teaching/learning activities (communication, numeracy, information management, critical thinking and problem solving, interpersonal and personal skills)
  • apply skills in alternative adult learning approaches such as informal learning, performance support systems and knowledge management

OLC 100 Adult Learning
  Start Date: May 2024, September 2024, January 2025  
This course focuses on learning how to apply the principles of adult learning and to develop the basic skills essential to successful instruction. This is specifically designed for teachers and trainers in all fields who present information to adults. Note: Course contains mandatory group work. Students must complete all evaluations and receive and overall mark of 50% to pass this course. Textbook Required: Cost of textbook is extra

OLC 101 Adults with Learning Disabilities
  Start Date: May 2024, September 2024, January 2025  
This course provides insight into the needs and issues of adults with learning disabilities in the educational setting, and in society as a whole. Awareness and familiarization of disabilities, characteristics, strategies and skills are explored so that educators can provide the appropriate modifications to course content, delivery and evaluation for adults with learning disabilities. Prerequisites: OLC 100 Adult Learning

OLC 102 Assessment and Evaluation
  Start Date: May 2024, September 2024, January 2025  

This course will give an overview of the processes involved in assessment and evaluation. By gaining an understanding of the differences between these two concepts, students will become familiar with a variety of evaluation and assessment techniques that can be used to gain an understanding of the needs of learners and stakeholders. Learners will be encouraged to evaluate their own practice as a teacher or trainer in their environment. Note: This course contains mandatory group work. Students must complete all evaluations and receive an overall mark of 50% to pass. Textbook Required: The cost of textbook is extra. Prerequisites: OLC 100 Adult Learning

OLC 103 Curriculum Development
  Start Date: May 2024, September 2024, January 2025  
This course outlines the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a systematic approach to curriculum development. Specifically, this course will cover topics such as the development of course outlines; learning outcomes; lesson plans and program design. You will also learn how to choose instructional techniques and develop a marking system to evaluate participant success. Note: Course contains mandatory group work. Prerequisites: OLC 100 Adult Learning

OLC 104 Instructional Techniques
  Start Date: May 2024, September 2024, January 2025  
This course explores the various ways an instructor can effectively engage and challenge adult learners. There will be opportunities to investigate and demonstrate instructional techniques such as active participation, questioning styles, thinking skills, concept attainment, co-operative learning, online learning and lesson design. Note: Course contains mandatory group work. Software Requirements: A microphone may be used to complete an assignment; however, it is an optional purchase Textbook Required: Cost of textbook is extra. Prerequisites: OLC 100: Adult Learning.
