Introduction to Addictions and Mental Health

This course is an introductory investigation into the study of addictions and mental health. Students study the psychological, physiological, sociological and environmental factors that contribute to mental health, mental illness, substance use and addictions. Various addictions, both behavioural and substance-based, are explored with a review of different classifications of mental illnesses and concurrent disorders. Students identify substance categorizations, evidence-based intervention and treatment models. They explore their own values and biases associated with these topics as well as the societal ramifications and associated with these life experiences.
