The course focuses on theories and methods of work with groups. Students explore the use of group work with a range of populations, with issues such as prevention, social action, mutual aid, and treatment. Examination of group dynamics in relation to staff and team relationships are also emphasized. This course provides students with a perspective which considers the special qualities of group practice as an integrative part of intervention in various settings. Within the field of group practice the various group approaches of social group work, including task groups, educational, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral groups are addressed. Student will explore their own patterns of behavior within a group and learn how to work effectively with groups of people both as a member of a group and as a leader of a group. Throughout the course, the impact of racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, and poverty in the provision of group services and in group dynamics, is explored.
