Substance Use and Harm Reduction

In this course, students explore the physiological and psychological effects of various substances on the human body, including alcohol, nicotine, prescription medications, hallucinogens, cocaine, opioids, cannabis, inhalants, and anabolic steroids. Emphasis is placed on understanding patterns of substance use, including non-medical and potentially harmful use, within a broader social, psychological, and cultural context. Students will be introduced to the foundational principles of pharmacology and understand the application of these concepts to clinical practice and program design.
