Introduction to Elder Mediation

Course Code: ADR 5010

Academic Year: 2024-2025

Family disputes arise not only in the context of separation and divorce, but extend to situations involving the care, living arrangements, and financial support of an older adult and the physical or mental incapacity or death of a family member. ADR professionals and more traditional mental health and legal professionals can learn from one another to enhance our ability to assist this vulnerable population. The objective of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to form a basis to begin to understand the underlying root of the elder (age-related) conflict and begin to know that conflict often lies beyond the defined perceived issues in dispute. Students will begin to understand how involved family members and friends can be integral to resolving problems in an honest and meaningful way that strengthens family systems and increases community health.
