Entrepreneurial Expertise: The Business of Writing

This course is designed for writers and editors and serves as an introduction to small business management or the freelance career path. Students will be introduced to the concepts of entrepreneurship, including responding to RFPs, writing grant proposals/applications and developing business plans. The goal of this course is to give students a basic understanding of the contemporary writing marketplace, the steps involved in deciding to enter independent business, and the processes involved in starting a new enterprise. At the same time, students will be given the opportunity to advance their problem-solving and decision-making skills. Students will develop their own small business plans, practicing key skills such as researching and targeting clients, defining and naming the business, accounting rudiments, invoicing, and information and record management.
