Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

Course Code: BENG 2500

Academic Year: 2024-2025

Students learn thermodynamics and heat transfer together with their applications to engineering designs. Concepts of energy, heat, work, enthalpy and entropy. First and second laws of thermodynamics. Properties of pure substances and mixtures. Phase equilibrium. Ideal heat engines and refrigerators. Rankine Cycles, Vapor Compression Cycle, Gas Turbine Cycle, Mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation. Steady state heat transfer. Solution of conduction equation. Convective heat transfer coefficients. Momentum and heat transfer analogies. Basics of radiative heat transfer. Students participate in interactive lectures and laboratory sessions, and are evaluated by assignments, lab reports, and tests.
