The aim of this course is to develop students' perspectives of the various subfields of Biotechnology and their relevance. Through in-class discussions of historical developments and current trends, students recognize and appreciate many of the fundamental subfields of biotechnology, including microbial, agricultural, industrial, environmental, forensic, aquatic and medical biotechnology. Special emphasis is placed on examining pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. Regulatory framework, ethical and sociocultural considerations in the biotechnology field are also explored.
