This course provides students with the foundation for analytical chemistry. Students acquire knowledge of laboratory techniques commonly encountered in chemical analysis with practical application to food, pharmaceutical, industrial, and environmental science. Students learn to determine composition and structure of chemical components by understanding methods of separation, identification, and quantification and practice the correct use of significant figures, statistical analysis, calculation, and mathematical conversions for chemical analysis, with an emphasis on accuracy and precision. Students integrate collective knowledge into appropriate methodology selection and data analysis. Students explore and research principles and applications of titrimetric (acid-base, redox, precipitation), chromatographic (GC, HPLC, SEC, IEC, TLC), spectroscopic (UV-VIS, IR, AA, MS) methods of analysis.
