Book Production and Design

Students learn the critical role played by the production department and its relationship to all personnel within the publishing environment. They become familiar with manufacturing processes and specifications for many types of books in this course. Every aspect of book production is explored, from identification of the many components of a book, print and digital, to what they cost and how these components are assembled in the finished product. Students will gain an understanding of digital workflows from a scheduling standpoint, design creation, production editorial, composition, to final preparation for print and digital prepress and ePub creation. Students will explore the principals of design, work with common design software, and will develop critical design skills.
