Students explore foundational principles of community work from a locality development approach. Historical and theory- based perspectives on community capacity building, social capital, power and resources consider contributions from the Antigonish movement and community economic development models. Methods of engaging citizens in the change process include examples from popular education and social learning approaches with a focus on critical pedagogy using Freire's pioneering work in literacy. Students acquire practice-based skills for community engagement and learn techniques for root cause analysis and ways to encourage citizens to empower themselves and build community resources.
