The course introduces students to key issues and debates on Canada's immigration policy as well as examining/refugee policies. We will look at how our immigration and refugee system regulates the flow of people in and out of Canada and how these policies impact individuals, families, communities, and businesses. The course will also examine how factors such as race, politics, economic interests, gender, and sexual orientation impact our immigration and refugee system, Groupings/categories of immigrants such as temporary foreign workers, refugees, business class immigrants, undocumented immigrants and permanent residents will be examined. We will also look at various sources that speak to the lived experience of newcomers to Canada and their efforts at settlement and integration into Canada in addition to their quest toward citizenship.
