This course focuses on foundational principles of community organizing from a social action approach. Using critical theory students will examine the polarization of political and economic power in society and understand how pressure tactics are used by groups to influence social structures such as government and media. Alinsky's rules for radicals will be applied to mobilize citizens to build numbers and solidarity. The role of social media in building support and awareness for social justice issues will be examined. Students will develop practice based skills including the ability for critical analysis, debate, advocacy and campaign organizing.
