This course provides students with an overview of the non-profit sector and an understanding of how human service agencies are governed and managed. Students will build an organization from the ground up gaining an understanding of key organization components such as values, vision, mission, culture, goals, programs and services, outcome objectives, governance, policies and procedures, quality assurance, risk management, financial management and human resources best practice. Analyzing organizations that deliver culturally competent services will include an examination of staff training and physical space that is accessible and welcoming to diverse community members. The structure of organization funding as it currently exists in Ontario will be explored along with strategies for accessing government, corporate, private and foundation dollars as part of an organization's overall funding diversification strategy. A discussion of for-profit philanthropic endeavors will examine the role of corporate giving in supporting communities.
