This course provides students with an introduction to the theory and practice of community-based corrections. The historical evolution of community corrections is examined and various components within the continuum of community corrections are critically analyzed. These include probation, pre-trial release, conditional release and other forms of community supervision. The students will also be engaged in the development of case management planning as a means of determining risk to the community presented by clients of the criminal justice system. In addition, the cost, benefits and challenges of community- based corrections will be explored.
