This course examines the role of community and institutional corrections in Canada's justice system and Canadian society. It explores the historical and current controversies related to probation, pre-trial release, conditional release, jails, prisons, parole and other forms of community supervision. It considers the essential features of and key players in each component of the correctional system. It debates the purposes and accomplishments of modern prisons and correctional practices and what alternatives might exist. It posits the costs, benefits and challenges associated with the ways in which punishment is meted out through the Canadian criminal justice system.
