This course will discuss foundational psychological concepts and teach students to describe and understand Addiction, Mental Health, Mental Disorders and Mental Illness. In addition, students will acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by front-line workers and supervisors to deliver responsive and effective substance use disorder treatment and mental health services while promoting empowerment, self-determination, and optimum quality of life to individuals. At the same time, we will explore the value of advocating, at a system level, for non-judgmental acceptance and unconditional positive regard for individuals with addictions and mental health issues.
