Crime Prevention

Course Code: CRIM 3001

Academic Year: 2024-2025

Instead of being based on scientific evidence, the crime prevention and policy agenda is seemingly driven by political ideology, anecdotal evidence and trends. Building on the knowledge and skills acquired during the previous semesters of study within the criminological fields' of social development, situational crime management and correctional incapacitation, this course challenges students to apply their skills and knowledge to develop a crime management plan using a holistic justice systems approach. Students apply their skills in statistical analysis, research methods, and conflict management in conjunction with their understanding of criminological motivators and deviant behaviour to develop a strategic implementation plan in order to address a criminogenic challenge. The ultimate product is a stand alone implementation plan for a real problem, encompassing the scientific principles of evidenced based practice, measurement and crime reduction within the framework of the justice system. Students have the option of working individually or in small groups.
