Systemic Discrimination and Crime

This course provides students an opportunity to utilize an anti-oppressive framework to examine how historical and current practices create and sustain systemic discrimination at institutions in and around the criminal justice system, with a focus on the intersectional nature of such discrimination. Through examining economic, legal, policy, personnel, and implementation actions of Canadian institutions students will be able to identify how systemic discrimination is perpetuated. The course will encourage students to analyze institutional patterns and practices with a focus on equity while also learning about the role of professionals and policy makers to reduce the prevalence of systemic discrimination. Students will develop the reflexive practices that will rely on as scholars, citizens, and professionals in Canada.
