Institutional Culture

Course Code: CRIM 4503

Academic Year: 2024-2025

This course encourages students to critically examine the intersections of social and justice institutions within a Canadian context. Focusing on correctional institutions, the culture and motivations affiliated with incarceration are debated (including themes of protection, retribution, reintegration, and the role of correctional officers). This course will also analyze the effects of incarceration on special populations in relation to systemic issues such as racism and sexism and how institutions handle familial issues and visits. An opportunity to critically challenge media representations of incarceration is also fostered.
