This introductory course will examine Canadian legislation relevant to the field of Child and Youth Care. Topics will include: child rights, the Child and Family Services Act, Indigenous child welfare, youth justice and education. Students will be asked to consider how, for each of these domains, societal views of children and youth impact the creation of rules and legislation. Likewise, students will also examine the role that each level of Canadian government plays in the creation and implementation of legislation impacting young people. Finally, students will familiarize themselves with multiple Toronto resources in order to gain knowledge on community resources available for young people. There is a strong focus on developing critical thinking skills and advocacy.
