Child Abuse: Responses and Resiliency

Course Code: CYC 2000

Academic Year: 2024-2025

This course will provide students with a critical, in-depth understanding of child abuse, including its causes, forms, indicators, and impacts. In addition to developing a critical awareness of child abuse, students will gain an introductory skillset to understanding their roles and responsibilities as Child and Youth Care professionals in relation to working with children and adolescents who have experienced abuse. Students will strengthen their critical thinking as they become aware of the systemic factors that impact the prevalence and incidence of child abuse, such as anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism and other forms of systemic oppression in a Canadian context. The framework of resiliency will be used throughout the course to highlight the value of courage, abilities, coping strategies, and strengths in youth and families.
