Response to Abuse

Course Code: CYC 209

Academic Year: 2024-2025

Students spend time reflecting on their own responses to the topic of child abuse and effective self-care strategies. Various types of abuse will be defined. Abuse will be explored in the context of how the abuse occurred for the child or youth and the factors that contribute to abusive actions. Students will begin to recognize some common behavioural manifestations of an abuse experience. The legal obligations of reporting are central to this course. In addition, the responsibility of the child and youth care practitioner in advocating at both an individual and societal level is explored and practised. Intervention strategies to provide support and personal safety for the child or youth as they overcome their abuse experience are emphasized in the context of the role of a CYC.
