This course will deal with developing a context that will assist the child and youth care practitioner in their work with families. The student will, through class debate and discussion, role-plays and group work, develop and practice skills that facilitate the ability to foster a collaborative partnership with parents that promotes parent competence and involvement of all family members in their own problem solving. The course also explores the topic of substance use and addictions. The student will learn about resiliency, stages of change, the continuum of use and understanding dependence. Current drug information, intervention and prevention strategies and the impact of addiction on families will also be discussed.
