In this independent study course, students will learn about both educational strategies and professionalism. Students will develop skills and techniques to modify teaching activities and materials for students with developmental, physical and/or learning disabilities. Effective adaptation of teaching plans and strategies for increasing student success will be presented and the role of the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) in relation to teachers will be examined. The course will also focus on the skills which define professionalism in the Developmental Sector. Effective communication and documentation, ethical decision-making, conflict resolution, and self-care are course highlights. Students will also learn to advocate on behalf of those with developmental disabilities as well as to promote the profile of their own profession.
