This course is designed for students whose first language is not English and who are preparing for entry into a post-secondary institution. It focuses on helping students improve their English-language competence and study skills, as applied to academic contexts, at the low-intermediate level (Common European Framework of Reference for Language A2.2).This integrated language-skills course focuses on the continued development of academic study skills within the program stream. As such, students focus on comprehending and analyzing reading texts, producing logically and adequately developed extended paragraphs which discuss causes, listening to brief dialogues and lectures while taking notes, and participating in discussions that synthesize and evaluate ideas connected to reading and writing topics. Examples of target activities and exercises include: close reading, skimming and scanning, note taking, explanation, discussion, information transfer, text-manipulation, summarizing, composition, and editing. Students are responsible for keeping journals, integrating the study of related academic vocabulary.
