This course is designed for students whose first language is not English and who are preparing for entry into a post-secondary institution. It focuses on helping students improve their English-language competence and study skills, as applied to academic contexts, at the B1 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Language).This course integrates all language skills and is based around two themes, which are explored through intensive reading of core texts and extended into discussions and writing assignments. The meaning, language, style, and implications of these texts are examined in class through active reading, discussion, text-manipulation, and summarizing exercises. Relevant grammar and vocabulary are developed. Students are also introduced to principles of academic integrity and documentation as they engage in a guided research assignment, which includes an essay.
