This course is designed for students whose first language is not English and who are preparing for entry into a post-secondary institution. It focuses on helping students improve their English-language competence and study skills, as applied to academic contexts, at the low-advanced level (Common European Framework of Reference for Language B2). The course is an integrated skills course with major emphasis given to the development of writing, grammar, listening/note-taking and debate skills. Academic writing focuses on the writing of a clear, well-developed five paragraph essay using an appropriate academic writing style and according to specific rhetorical modes. The revision and editing of essays for appropriate organization, word choice, grammatical accuracy, and writing conventions is an important component of academic writing. Also, effective note-taking procedures in free format is a major focus of the course as students listen to authentic talks, lectures, podcasts, etc. for main and supporting ideas, and express their opinions in group and class discussions. Students are introduced to the format and procedures of formal debates. Emphasis is on the preparation and presentation of appropriate arguments with the use of reliable and relevant resources.
