Group Exercise Leadership

This course is designed to teach the skills required to plan and instruct group exercise classes in a variety of settings and formats. There is a special emphasis on working with special populations, including participants with cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors. Students design and deliver fitness classes, appropriate for all populations, to the Humber Community. Topics covered include: use of music, choreography, cueing, class formats, intensity monitoring and modification techniques, successful instruction of groups, and criteria for teaching special populations. Students gain skills in the instruction of aerobic group exercise, group strength training and flexibility training. Students learn by participating in a variety of sessions and also by leading sessions themselves. Evaluation and feedback comes from the instructor and from peers.
