Professional Education for Financial Planning

Course Code: FIN 4515

Academic Year: 2024-2025

This course covers the CFP Professional Education Program, which was developed by the FP Canada Institute and provides practical and actionable knowledge that teaches students how to apply their technical education to real-life client situations, in the practice of financial planning. The Program focuses on a "3H" financial planning approach - Holistic, Human, and Honest. Holistic Financial Planning: applying knowledge while understanding all of the client's circumstances, priorities, and goals. Human Behaviour: understanding human behaviour and how clients make decisions. Honesty and Ethics: knowing the professional and ethical responsibility of a financial planner. This course also covers Professional Ethics and teaches students the distinction between integrity-based professional obligations and compliance-based obligations, with emphasis on the financial services landscape. It introduces the specific professional obligations of QAFP professionals and CFP professionals, why they matter and what they mean in practical terms. This course can be taken either as a business degree elective or in place of the Senior Level Business Project for students in the Bachelor of Commerce Finance degree program who have met the course pre-requisites.
