Aging and Dementia

In this course, participants will critically examine current attitudes towards aging and how these attitudes influence the care and treatment of older adults. The definitions and causes of dementia, principles of care, and strengths-based approaches will be reviewed. The effectiveness of several treatment modalities to support people with dementia will be evaluated including pharmacology, cognitive behavioural therapy, and applied behaviour analysis. Students will learn to conduct a functional behavioural assessment and to create a behaviour support plan meeting the needs of individuals with dementia.
